What Is Chronic Pain?
There are two types of pain: chronic and acute. Acute pain comes on suddenly and remedies itself within a few weeks such as when you break a bone and it heals. Chronic pain is defined as constant pain that lasts more than six months. For some, the pain is milder than for others, but the common denominator is that it is always present. Studies estimate that about 100 million people in the U.S. suffer from chronic pain. Not only does chronic pain affect patients physically, it also takes a toll on them mentally and emotionally.
What Causes Chronic Pain?
There is no one cause for chronic pain. It may start as the result of an accident or other trauma, infection, illness, or even nerve damage. Chronic headaches are a form of chronic pain as is arthritis and lower back pain.
What Are the Symptoms of Chronic Pain?
The main symptom of chronic pain is constant pain which may not always be debilitating, but is always present. Additionally, other symptoms that accompany chronic pain include the following:
- Exhaustion
- Weakness
- Inability to fall asleep or stay asleep
- Lack of desire to participate in activities
- Constant need to rest
- Weakened immune system
- Depression, anxiety, and stress
How Does Functional Medicine Treat Chronic Pain?
Functional medicine focuses on determining factors that may be contributing to the patient’s pain, whether physical, emotional or psychological. Once we address any genetic, environmental, inflammatory, infectious, nutritional, or psychological factors that may prevent the mind or body from healing, we can design a plan that focuses on returning balance to the systems in the body.
What Is the Cost of Treating Chronic Pain through Functional Medicine?
At the Falcone Center, the cost for treating patients in Philadelphia, PA, Maple Shade, NJ, and the surrounding area is based on the appointment. Deposit is due when scheduling initial appointment.
It is important to note that the Falcone Center does not accept insurance as it is considered an “out-of-network provider” by most major insurance plans. While we cannot file insurance claims on our patients’ behalf, we can easily provide them with receipts and the necessary paperwork to file for reimbursement. We suggest that our patients determine whether their plans cover functional medicine prior to making an appointment.
Why Should I Choose the Falcone Center to Treat My Chronic Pain?
Chronic pain is mentally and physically devastating to those who suffer from it. At the Falcone Center, we have a strong desire to help alleviate chronic pain by determining the underlying cause of the pain. Once achieved, we can address any factors that may be contributing to the pain in an attempt to improve the quality of life. Our functional medicine approach takes those patients who are not healing with traditional methods of pain management and gets them back on a better path by addressing factors often neglected in conventional medicine. Although prescription pain medication may still be needed as part of a regimen, by addressing the underlying causes of pain, the pain can be better managed which provides the patient with a better quality of life.
