Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment for Hair Loss
At the 2013 7th Annual World Congress for Hair Research held in Edinburgh, Scotland UK, information was presented which supported the use of PRP for hair growth. Since that time, the use of PRP for hair loss has become very popular. The growth factors locked within the platelet rich plasma can be injected into the areas of alopecia (hair loss), stimulating hair regrowth. Because PRP comes from your own blood, the risk of an adverse reaction is low.
What is PRP – Platelet Rich Plasma?
PRP Platelet Rich Plasma comes from a person’s own blood platelets. Platelets are tiny cells that are important to healing and are the body’s primary source of natural growth factors for healing and tissue regeneration.
Platelets contain many proteins, cytokines and growth factors, such as Connective Tissue Growth Factor, Transforming Growth Factor, Epidermal Growth Factor, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Platelet Derived Growth Factor. Studies suggest that these blood-derived growth factors can play an important role in regulating hair follicle function – making them an effective treatment for both alopecia areata and the more common androgenetic alopecia.
In the fields of regenerative and cellular medicine, research continues to advance with regard to the ability of PRP to attract, stimulate and orchestrate stem cell activity to improve healing and promote tissue regeneration. There are currently many uses of PRP in orthopedics, sports medicine, dental reconstruction, neurosurgery, dermatology, and plastic surgery.
During your consultation we will discuss the treatments or combination of treatments that may work best for you.
If PRP Hair treatment is recommended, we will discuss either doing a series of PRP stand alone treatments or suggest adding ACell or Amnion to one of your sessions.
What do Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant and Kim Kardashian all have in common?
They all were treated with Platelet Rich Plasma for regenerative purposes.
What can I expect with PRP treatment?
First your blood would be drawn for processing through the FDA-cleared Magellan TruPRP device. The amount of blood drawn depends on the amount of PRP necessary to cover the area of concern injecting the PRP at tight 1cm intervals. We draw up to 180cc of blood and process it through the Magellan TruPRP device to concentrate the platelet rich growth factors to 15-21cc of fluid. PRP can be used as a stand-alone treatment for hair loss or it can be combined with ACell, Amnion, Micro-needling, micronized fat and other therapies offered at the Falcone Center.
The Magellan TruPRP device separates platelets and plasma from other blood components. In some cases, Extracellular Matrix products such as ACell or Amnion would be mixed with the PRP prior to injection in the scalp.
Microneedling of the skin is performed immediately following the injection to activate platelets.
The procedure takes about one hour to perform and patients may resume all activities the next day.
We recommend you wear a headband after the procedure to help prevent any of the fluid involved in the procedure from tracking into the forehead. It is also best to lie back after the procedure to assist gravity in pulling the fluid back instead of forward into the forehead region which could cause facial swelling.
Immediately after treatment, you will experience mild soreness and redness of the scalp. This usually resolves in a day or two and improved hair growth can be measured in a matter of weeks.
If you have purchased a laser cap, you can use it for 15 minutes prior to injection and for 15 minutes after injection and then 2-3 times weekly post treatment. We offer discounted pricing on high quality medical laser therapy caps and can discuss your options during your consultation.
Does all PRP work the same?
Unfortunately not! There is great variation in the quality and quantity of PRP used to treat hair loss. At the Falcone Center, we use orthopedic grade, highly concentrated PRP. It takes about 1 hour for us to process your blood through the Magellan TruPRP device, we know the time is worth it ,as you will have up to 21cc of concentrated PRP for use in your treatment.
Since we perform PRP treatments daily, we also have ACell and Amnion available to enhance your treatment if needed. Our goal is to give you effective, long lasting treatment using a comprehensive approach.
Does PRP need to be repeated?
The hair follicle-stimulating results of PRP treatment for hair regrowth are NOT permanent. Adding Amnion or ACell to your treatment regimen may extend your results for up to 12 months. If using PRP as a stand-alone therapy, you will need treatment at more frequent intervals to maintain the benefits of PRP.
We recommend analyzing your results 6-12 months post treatment to determine optimal treatment intervals. If a patient notices a return of accelerated shedding at any point they should return for treatment.
How are ACell and Amnion used in Hair Restoration?
ACell or Amnion Extracellular matrix can be used in hair restoration treatment in combination with PRP to stimulate stem cells and rejuvenate and repair skin and hair follicles. At the Falcone Center we also use PRP combined with Amnion for the O-Shot and P-shot to enhance these sexual health treatments.
What is Amnion?
Amnion is a human-derived Extracellular Matrix ECM produced from donated placental tissue at the time of a live birth (not aborted tissue). It acts as a bioscaffold and contains powerful proteins that activate stem cells, reduce inflammation and have other benefits
How is low level laser therapy used for hair loss treatment?
Use of low level laser therapy for 30 minutes 2-3 times a week can help treat hair loss, thinning hair and improve the quality, strength and thickness of hair in appropriate patients.
Because hair grows at a rate of about 1cm per month, it could take 6 to 12 months to see the effects of laser treatment.
The laser caps offered at the Falcone Center are only sold in by physicians and offer high quality home treatment up to 40x more powerful then the average laser brush. Using a laser cap allows for convenience while treating the scalp with laser therapy.
Some parts of the scalp will respond better to laser treatment then others. Response will be proportional to the amount of weak hair follicles in a given area. The more weak hair follicles, the greater the improvement in hair mass. Unfortunately if there are few follicles in a particular area of the scalp, you will notice less improvement from laser therapy in those areas.
As with other non-surgical hair loss treatments such as Minoxidil and PRP, the response to treatment will be proportional to the amount of hair that can be improved.
