Ozempic and Wegovy are both Semaglutide…the same medication with slightly different dosing and indications. Ozempic was FDA approved for diabetes in 2017. Wegovy was FDA approved in 2021 for weight loss in patients with obesity (BMI >30) or patients with BMI >27 with other medical problems. Semaglutide suppresses the appetite by acting like the GLP-1 hormone. Glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1) targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite.
Mounjaro is also a GLP-1 receptor agonist but it has the additional effect of also activating the GIP receptor. This helps to control blood sugar, appetite and slow down the movement of food through your stomach leaving your feel full longer.
Semaglutide, Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy all have the potential side effect of causing feelings of nausea. Treatment starts with a lower dose. In time, the dose can be increased depending on side effects.
