Fibromyalgia is a common condition that causes widespread pain throughout the muscles and bones. Fibromyalgia affects women more than men, and it can run in families. It is more commonly seen in patients who have suffered some sort of trauma, have an infection, have another painful condition like arthritis, and/or have a mood disorder like depression. Here at The Falcone Center we encourage you to learn more about this condition and what can be done to treat it.
What are the Symptoms?
The most common and best-known symptom is expansive, debilitating pain. The patient has aches all over their body. Other symptoms can vary from person to person and include the following:
- Headaches
- Painful and tender points throughout the body
- Numbness or tingling in hands, feet, and limbs
- Irritability
- Severe menstrual cramps
- Stiffness upon waking in the morning
- Urinary tract issues
- Deep musculoskeletal pain
- Inability to remember things or concentrate
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
What is Functional Medicine?
Functional medicine is a specialized approach that tries to identify the underlying causes of a disease. By contrast, conventional medicine focuses on treating the symptoms. It also emphasizes treating the patient as an individual and looking at the basic systems in the body to try determining the etiology. Practitioners of functional medicine believe that the causes of fibromyalgia include food sensitivities, genetics, stress, exposure to toxins, and inflammation. We will examine and test the patient to try to determine the cause of the fibromyalgia. We will also take the patient’s medical history. After determining the cause of the fibromyalgia, we will recommend a suitable treatment.
