What Is The Vbeam® Pulsed Dye Laser?
The Vbeam® Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL) produces a specific wavelength of light that is directed onto skin spots or conditions that consist of blood vessels and blood.
What Is The Vbeam® Pulsed Dye Laser Used For?
The Vbeam® Pulsed Dye Laser is best used for the treatment of the following:
- One or more facial spider veins
- Port-wine stains or nevus flammeus
- Small, cherry angiomas
- Certain types of scars
At Falcone Center, we also use PDL for the treatment of rosacea, telangiectasia, and spider veins, as well as for skin rejuvenation.
Who May Have Vbeam® Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment?
Any individual can have PDL treatment, no matter their skin type or age.
How Is Vbeam® Pulsed Dye Laser Performed?
Prior to undergoing Vbeam® laser treatment, you need to avoid sun exposure and wear sun block every time you are outside. This will improve how effective the treatment is and enhance the results.
For the treatment, Dr. Falcone will provide protective eyewear for both of you to put on during the procedure. First, she will ask you to lie down to begin the procedure. The laser will be calibrated for the condition that needs to be treated and for your skin type. Next, Dr. Falcone will apply the laser to the target area and provide cooling intermittently for your comfort. Most patients feel mild sensations during PDL treatment, but Dr. Falcone may provide a topical anesthetic for you if you are very sensitive.
How Long Is Each Treatment?
PDL is performed quickly and usually only requires a few minutes. However, how long it takes depends on the size of the target area.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The amount of PDL treatments you will need depends on the condition or lesion that you want to be treated. One spider vein, for instance, usually needs just one or two treatments. However, a port-wine stain on the cheek might require several treatments.
How Will I Look Following Each Treatment?
Following the treatment, you need to continue to avoid sun exposure and put on sunblock before you go outside. It is likely that you will feel as if your skin is tightening in the area that was treated, and you might begin to see the benefits immediately*. You could also experience some redness or swelling of the area, and it should only take a few hours for this to dissipate. A laser bruise could occur, but this is rare and only takes a few days to fade away. You may use makeup to cover the bruise in the meantime.
How Do I Take Care of My Skin After Vbeam® Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment?
There are no specific care requirements for your skin following PDL. You simply need to protect it from the sun with sunblock of SPF 30 or higher every day. It is also important to wear sun protective clothing.
